At the end of November, the Disney fan community received two lovely gifts: the unveiling of the new Olaf animatronic at Disneyland Paris accompanied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EoPN02bmzrE\">a Walt Disney Imagineering video<\/a> and a 4 hours long retrospective<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NyIgV84fudM\"> on the animatronics of the Disney parks by Defunctland.<\/a>Obviously, this didn't escape my radar, and while I've always admired robots in general, this time I wanted to make my own! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to this first post \"I build my own animatronic\" where we will look in a little more detail at the manufacturing plan for 'Spino'!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Disney&#039;s Olaf Self-Roaming Robot Comes to Life World of Frozen\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dbjm02cvdiQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea behind this animatronic is primarily to learn and step outside my comfort zone. I've been trained in web development, and I use it daily in my work, but apart from a few electronics courses in middle and high school, I'm starting almost from scratch to create a robot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, being convinced that you have to throw yourself into it completely when you want to learn, I'm starting with something quite ambitious!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udca1<strong>Idea<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We're going to create a small robot that talks and expresses emotions. This little robot would be a daily companion (like Alexa) with whom I could interact to ask for information in all sorts of fields: movies, history, music, sports, literature, art\u2026 Ultimately, I'd like to be able to train it so it can develop a personality (voice, character, expressions\u2026). And in parallel, I'm going to take this opportunity to keep a log of the creation process on this blog. Feel free to give me advice if you have any experience in this area :), I'd love to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\uddbc\ufe0f<strong>Context <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This robot should also be able to operate via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to initially communicate with a computer. Later, it should be able to function offline, using a pre-recorded database. Since this is a small companion I'm building just for myself, I don't want to rely on any paid monthly subscriptions. Therefore, I'd prefer to use well-documented, open-source libraries!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd27<strong>Hardware<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the microcontroller side, I narrowed it down to two options: using an ESP32 or a Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi is more powerful and permissive, but the<strong>ESP32<\/strong> should be enough for me since it includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. My components order also includes a breadboard, Dupont cables, a battery and a power supply module to allow the animatronic to eventually operate without a PC, as well as an SD card and a module for <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.espressif.com\/projects\/esp-idf\/en\/latest\/esp32\/api-reference\/storage\/sdmmc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>read\/write responses and configurations on the ESP32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/hyada.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Composants.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hyada.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Composants.png 1024w, https:\/\/hyada.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Composants-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/hyada.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Composants-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/hyada.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Composants-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some components I have received to date.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udda5\ufe0fSoftware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Software side<\/strong>, Ollama will allow us to answer the questions. <a href=\"https:\/\/ollama.com\/\">Ollama<\/a> is known for running its large language models (LLMs) locally on the computer. The idea would be to integrate it into a Python project and create a new, customized model by referencing an Ollama model. Ollama will allow us to answer the questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udde3\ufe0f\u27a1\ufe0f\ud83d\udcd6 Regarding the transcription of the audio signal into text (question recognition), we will start with <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ggml-org\/whisper.cpp\">Whisper.cpp<\/a> which works relatively well in French and is quite lightweight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udcd6\u27a1\ufe0f\ud83d\udde3\ufe0f Finally, for transcribing the text into audio, we need a lightweight module such as <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ihuguet\/picotts\">Pico.tts<\/a> or Google Text-to-Speech. We'll see which one performs best and is most customizable based on the tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, in the VSCODE project, we should be able to launch animations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf80 Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the appearance would be inspired by the Muppets. The idea would be to model and print a PLA structure for the body and cover it with faux fur fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we'll see all that in a future post \ud83d\ude09!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That concludes this first post!
